Buddy’s Happy Tail: From Foster Vacation to Forever Home
Buddy—known as “Hook” during his brief pirate phase—was adopted from the shelter as a young kitten in July. A few weeks later, when his adopter’s housing situation unexpectedly changed, he returned to the shelter through no fault of his own. With the shelter already bursting at the seams with summer kittens, I was asked if I could foster him for a few weeks while his adopter worked on finding a new place.
It felt like the perfect first‑time foster situation: low risk, short term, and with a family already waiting for him. He was just supposed to take a little vacation at our house. We already had two ten‑year‑old cats and absolutely no plans to add a third. Famous last words.
When I brought him home, I fully intended to keep him separated from our resident cats—at least for a few days. That plan lasted approximately an hour before my husband opened the door and let Buddy explore. Ellie, our resident princess who believes change is a personal insult, growled and retreated immediately. PK, however, was fascinated. And Buddy? He acted as if he’d lived here all along.
Over the next few weeks, PK and Buddy became instant playmates, and PK took it upon himself to teach Buddy all the manners he’d missed out on as a solo kitten. Ellie discovered that kitten food is apparently gourmet cuisine. And we remembered what it was like to have a tiny tornado of chaos and joy in the house again.
Because if you’ve never lived with an orange kitten, imagine a cross between the Tasmanian Devil and Freddy Krueger—adorable, energetic, and armed with tiny, razor-sharp paws.
As the weeks went on, Buddy’s foster stay was extended a couple of times. Slowly, it became clear that Buddy wasn’t going anywhere.
And honestly? By then, neither were we.
PK would be lost without his new best friend. Ellie has successfully trained him in the sacred art of the 3 a.m. wake‑up call. And Buddy—our wild, sweet, orange whirlwind—has woven himself into every corner of our home and hearts. He may have arrived as a temporary guest, but he stayed because he was already family.
