The Stories That Keep Me Going
By Tamara Cervi
Every morning when I walk into the shelter, it’s not just a building full of kennels and cages that I see. It’s a building full of stories.
Some of those stories begin the moment an animal comes through our doors. Others began long before we ever meet them. Sometimes I know the entire journey that brought them to us—the good, the bad, and everything in between. And while some of those stories are uplifting, others are the kind that stay with you long after the lights are off and the building is quiet. There are a few that still give me nightmares.
Animal welfare is not always easy work. Anyone who has spent time in this field knows that. You see animals at their most vulnerable moments. You see the consequences of neglect, misunderstanding, and sometimes cruelty. But you also see resilience in its purest form. Animals have an incredible ability to forgive, to trust again, and to keep moving forward—even when their story has not been kind to them.
Those are the moments that stay with me just as much as the difficult ones.
For every heartbreaking story, there is another that restores my faith in humanity. It might be the family who drives across town to adopt a dog that everyone else overlooked. It might be the volunteer who shows up week after week to spend time with an animal who needs patience and consistency. It might be the community member who stops what they’re doing to help reunite a lost pet with the people who love them.
Those moments remind me that there are far more people who care than those who don’t.
Every animal that enters our shelter has a story, and I make it a point to know each one. I know where they came from, what they’ve been through, and what they need to move forward. That connection is what keeps this work meaningful for me. It transforms what could feel like routine tasks into something much bigger.
Some stories end with a family walking out the door with a new companion. Some end with a second chance that once seemed impossible. And sometimes the ending isn’t what we hoped for, but the story still leaves us with lessons—lessons about compassion, responsibility, and how we can do better next time.
Every single story gives me something. Sometimes it’s fulfillment. Sometimes it’s motivation to work harder. Sometimes it’s a lesson that helps me grow and improve the way we care for animals in our community.
But every story matters.
There isn’t a single animal in our shelter whose story I don’t know. And I believe that connection—to their journeys, their struggles, and their second chances—is what drives me to keep showing up every day.
It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.
And I know it’s what will keep me going for the rest of my career.
