Emergency Medical fund

Our Emergency Medical Fund is the safety net that stands between a treatable crisis and a tragic outcome. When shelter pets face urgent surgeries, complex diagnostics, or lifesaving treatments that fall outside municipal budgets, this fund steps in to cover the care they need. It ensures vulnerable animals receive critical medical attention at their most fragile moments, giving them a real chance to heal, thrive, and move toward the loving homes they deserve.

The Stories Behind Our Emergency Medical Fund

2025 Impact: 13 Animals Given a Second Chance

In 2025, our Emergency Medical Fund stepped in during some of the most urgent, complex, and heartbreaking cases of the year—providing lifesaving care that simply wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

Animals we helped save included:

  • Four newborn puppies abandoned in a barn during a snowstorm
  • An emergency C‑section for a shelter dog in distress
  • Four neonatal kittens abandoned at the shelter and bottle‑fed around the clock by a FLEAS volunteer
  • A kitten with a collapsed lung who survived a high‑risk blood patch procedure fully funded by FLEAS
  • A dog from another shelter with a six‑month‑old, untreated femoral fracture requiring immediate evaluation
  • A dog suffering from severe, advanced skin disease needing extensive diagnostics and medication
  • A medically fragile cat relinquished after adoption, treated and then fostered by a FLEAS board member so they wouldn’t have to return to the shelter

2024 Impact: 13 Animals Received Lifesaving Care

In 2024, our Emergency Medical Fund ensured that vulnerable shelter pets received the urgent medical attention they needed—from fragile newborns to animals facing life‑threatening illness or injury.

Animals receiving emergency care included:

  • A puppy fighting for its life who required urgent Parvo treatment
  • A severely neglected dog who arrived with a traumatic eye injury
  • A vulnerable litter of five kittens requiring immediate medical support
