🌸Spring Allergies & Pets: A Seasonal Guide for Pet Families
As the days get longer and North Texas starts to bloom, many of us feel that familiar tickle in the air, and our pets often feel it too. Spring brings sunshine, fresh starts, and… allergens. Lots of them.
While we’re stocking up on tissues and antihistamines, our pets may be quietly dealing with their own seasonal discomfort. Understanding spring allergies is an important part of responsible pet ownership.

🚨Poison Prevention Awareness:
What Every Pet Owner Should Know
National Pet Poison Prevention Month
Most pet parents hear “poison control” and picture bleach bottles or chemicals. But did you know that some of the most dangerous toxins for pets are everyday items they can easily reach, like chocolate, grapes, lilies, and even sugar‑free gum?
In our latest blog, we break down the surprising household hazards, the seasonal risks to watch for, and the simple habits that keep pets safe year‑round.
A little awareness goes a long way in protecting the animals we love.

🍼 Kitten Season Is Coming
Here’s How You Can Make a Difference
As spring approaches, so does kitten season—the time of year when shelters and rescues see a surge in pregnant cats and newborn litters. A few simple actions from our community can prevent hundreds of kittens from ever ending up in crisis.
1. Spay/Neuter Your Cats One unspayed female cat can have up to three litters a year, and her kittens can start reproducing as early as four months old. That’s how “cat math” turns one cat into dozens in just a year. Spaying and neutering is the single most effective way to reduce overcrowding and keep cats healthier and safer.
2. Volunteer to Foster Kittens thrive in homes, not kennels. Fostering gives them a safe place to grow, socialize, and prepare for adoption. If you’re curious about fostering or want to feel more prepared, the Kitten Lady’s fostering guides are a fantastic place to start: https://www.kittenlady.org/fostering.
3. Donate Kitten Supplies As intake surges, shelters and rescue organizations rely on community generosity to keep vulnerable kittens safe, warm, and growing strong. Help lighten the load for overwhelmed teams by dropping off supplies directly at Little Elm Animal Shelter or a rescue organization.

✨ Pet of the Week ✨
Each week, FLEAS spotlights a shelter pet on social media and digital billboards across town, boosting their visibility and giving them a better shot at finding a loving home. Last month, that spotlight truly delivered: three of our five featured pets have found their families!

Now, we need your help finding homes for Wallen and Batman.

The Best "Business in the Front" Buddy
Wallen is a 1-year-old Husky mix who doesn’t just walk into a room—he makes an entrance. With a natural "mullet-meets-mohawk" that would make his country music namesake proud, Wallen is a sweet, easygoing boy who fits in everywhere while still managing to stand out. He’s fun without being wild and ready to bring his signature style to your family!
The Best “Hero in the House” Sidekick
Batman may not be cruising through Gotham, but this handsome boy definitely brings superhero energy everywhere he goes. Calm, loyal, and always ready for treats, Batman is the perfect partner for anyone looking for a steady, loving sidekick. Kids aren’t really his scene, but for the right grown‑up home, he’s ready to swoop in and save the day.

Behind the Badge: The Stories That Keep Me Going
Every morning when I walk into the shelter, it’s not just a building full of kennels and cages that I see. It’s a building full of stories.
Some of those stories begin the moment an animal comes through our doors. Others began long before we ever meet them. Sometimes I know the entire journey that brought them to us—the good, the bad, and everything in between. And while some of those stories are uplifting, others are the kind that stay with you long after the lights are off and the building is quiet. There are a few that still give me nightmares.
Animal welfare is not always easy work. Anyone who has spent time in this field knows that. You see animals at their most vulnerable moments. You see the consequences of neglect, misunderstanding, and sometimes cruelty. But you also see resilience in its purest form. Animals have an incredible ability to forgive, to trust again, and to keep moving forward—even when their story has not been kind to them.
Those are the moments that stay with me just as much as the difficult ones...
