Finding Forever: Fran’s Sweet Senior Happy Tail

by The Gibson Family

You might remember sweet Fran, the senior dog who stole our hearts after being found abandoned in a vacant house with her litter of puppies. After spending four tough months shutting down in the shelter, Fran’s life took a beautiful turn. Today, we are absolutely thrilled to share a special update from her foster-turned-forever family about how this resilient girl is thriving outside the shelter walls!

"I found out about Fran through my work at the FLEAS pet pantry. Since I had been dogless for about two years, I agreed to help her as a foster. When fostering her, I could tell she needed stability and security... Fran fit in so well with us, she became a permanent part of our family."

🐾 33 Local Pets Take the "No More Babies" Pledge!

We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate a massive win for our community's four-legged residents! Throughout May and June, FLEAS teamed up with the wonderful folks at the Denton Animal Support Foundation and the Spay Neuter Society to host a life-changing community wellness event.

Together, we were able to provide free spay/neuter surgeries, microchips, and vital vaccines to local families who needed them most.

Because of this collaborative effort, 33 beloved local pets—including 15 dogs and 18 cats—officially took their "no more babies" pledge! By removing financial barriers to these crucial veterinary services, we aren't just protecting 33 individual animals; we are actively preventing thousands of unplanned litters, keeping pets healthy, and reducing the strain on our local shelter systems. A huge thank you to our incredible partners, volunteers, and donors who made this milestone possible!

Pet of the Week ✨

Each week, FLEAS spotlights a shelter pet on social media and digital signs across town to boost their visibility and help them find a loving home. We are absolutely overjoyed to share that June was a total success: Candy, Marly, Malaa, and Tootsie have all found their new families!

While we are celebrating these four happy tails, many more incredible pets are still waiting for their second chance.

🥫 Keeping Bowls Full: FLEAS Pet Food Pantry

No family should ever face the heartbreak of surrendering a beloved pet due to temporary financial hardship. Our Emergency Pet Food Pantry serves as a vital safety net, keeping local pets out of the shelter and right where they belong—safe at home with the people who love them.

Because of your incredible support, we are stepping up to meet a massive spike in community need. Through the first half of this year alone, FLEAS has proudly distributed 29,432 lbs of life-saving dog and cat food to families in our community. That's over 75% of our 2025 total distribution in only six months.

As demand continues to grow, our shelves empty faster than ever.

Community Partner Spotlight

We truly could not do what we do without the incredible support of our community partners. This month, we want to shine a bright spotlight on two organizations that make our Emergency Pet Food Pantry possible: the Little Elm Area Food Bank and Lovepacs-Little Elm.

Both of these organizations work tirelessly to fight human food insecurity in our area. By allowing FLEAS to step in alongside them, they ensure that when a human family receives a helping hand, their beloved pets are taken care of, too. We are deeply grateful for their dedication to keeping entire families—both two-legged and four-legged—fed, safe, and together!

🐕 Walking a "Barky, Lungy" Dog?

Does your peaceful neighborhood stroll turn into a stressful tug-of-war the moment another dog appears? If your pup barks or lunges on leash, it doesn't mean they are a "bad dog"—it usually means they are overwhelmed or frustrated. Understanding leash reactivity is the first step toward calmer walks. Check out this excellent article, Have a Barky, Lungy Walker? by Nicole Kohanski of Wiggle Butt Academy to learn why dogs react this way and how to help them feel safe and focused.
