As mosquito season returns, remember that heartworm disease is a silent, life-threatening disease, but it is 100% preventable.
|
While monthly preventatives are an added expense, they are a fraction of the cost of treating an active infection. For dogs, treatment is a long, painful process involving harsh injections and months of strict confinement. For cats and ferrets, the situation is even more critical: there is currently no approved cure for heartworms in cats or ferrets, making prevention their only line of defense.
|
To help keep your pets safe, clinics like Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) offer low-cost heartworm testing and affordable monthly preventatives.

Carrying her favorite toys around like precious little babies — it’s impossible not to smile.

Our volunteers are the heart of FLEAS — the hands behind every bag of food, the voices behind every event, the creativity behind every post, and the compassion behind every animal we help.

Together, they show what community looks like in action. They give their time, their talents, and their whole hearts to make life better for pets and families across the Little Elm area. Whether they’re fostering, planning events, sharing our posts, or stepping in wherever help is needed, our volunteers create real, lasting impact every single day.

While some FLEAS volunteers also choose to help at the shelter, FLEAS does not manage shelter volunteers. Little Elm Animal Services operates its own volunteer program, and anyone interested in volunteering directly at the shelter should reach out to them.

Behind the Badge: The Heart of the Shelter

There’s a quiet kind of magic that happens every day inside the shelter. It isn’t loud, and it doesn’t ask for recognition. It shows up early, stays late, cleans kennels, folds laundry, walks anxious dogs, and sits on the floor comforting scared cats.
|
It looks a lot like our volunteers.
|
Volunteering in an animal shelter isn’t glamorous. It’s messy, emotional, and sometimes heartbreaking. Yet our volunteers show up anyway. They learn routines, animal behavior, and how to celebrate the smallest wins — a shy dog finally taking treats, a fearful cat leaning in for pets, a long-term resident finding a home.
